Books on Exercise and Fitness

Books on exercise and fitness for the healthy home are a list of my favorites on this topic.

The two workout works listed below are the ones that I refer to often for my own fitness programs. They are a great reference for any household that takes their fitness routines seriously.

Don't let the title of the Pilates work that I have listed below fool you. This book is a great reference for women as well as men.

Age Defying Fitness: Making the Most of Your Body for the Rest of Your Life (Amazon.com Link) by Marilyn Moffat and Carole B. Lewis is a great work.

Written by two Physical Therapist, it covers the benefits and procedures on workouts for

  • Posture
  • Strength
  • Flexibility
  • Balance
  • And Endurance

It also discusses how to assess each of these categories on yourself to help you develop your own fitness program. And yes, it includes illustrations.

The Complete Book of Pilates for Men: The Lifetime Plan for Strength, Power & Peak Performance (Amazon.com Link) by Daniel Lyon covers just about every Pilates workout that you can think of. It also divides the workouts into Beginner, Intermediate and Advance Levels.

The illustrations and directions are clear and easy to follow.

Many today may think that Pilates is a female form of workouts, and this is far from the truth. Joseph Pilates was an acrobat, boxer and physical instructor. He used his methods as physical instructor for the German military police. Later, he taught his methods in New York for boxers, wrestlers, skiers, dancers and actors.

It also includes a great explanation of what the Center is, and the proper method of breathing.

A great Pilates reference.
